Introduction

This guide is made to assist with firmware updating Honeywell and Zebra devices.

Why should I upgrade devices?

Updating the firmware on scanners can be a great idea for multiple reasons.

Getting the latest security and stability updates can solve various problems.

With the newest versions of Mobile WMS, it can also be necessary to firmware update devices.

What do I need?

You need a Dropbox link from Tasklet Support to the appropriate android update file.

There are multiple updates pushed out every year from both manufactures. Ask Tasklet which version is best for you.

The device should be plugged into a charger since it will not update if it is low on power.

Updating requires a stable connection to download the files, and if you need to update multiple devices, this saves a substantial bit of time.

If you have different device models and operating systems, then carefully follow the instructions from Tasklet, as the patches are intended for specific device models and OS versions.

Scanner Manufactures

Click either the Honeywell or Zebra button to expand them and see the corresponding firmware update guide steps.

 Honeywell
  1. The first step is to unlock the device with I want to unlock a device
  2. Open a browser and input the Dropbox download link provided by Tasklet.
It's recommended to follow this guide to copy-paste the link using MobiControl:  How to copy and paste using RemoteControl
  3. Please wait for the download to finish for Honeywell; it's a 1 GB+ file, so a decent connection is required.
  4. Once the download is complete, open the HUpgrader app, and in the top right corner, click on the three dots and choose the Select OTA from storage option.
  5. The upgrade starts automatically, and once it reaches 100%, you get prompted to reboot the device.
  6. Once the device starts up again, the device has been updated, and the device should present you with the lockdown screen.
  7. You can validate the version in MobiControl by checking the OEM version, which should now show the updated version.
 Zebra
  1. The first step is to unlock the device with I want to unlock a device
  2. Open a browser and input the Dropbox download link provided by Tasklet.
It's recommended to follow this guide to copy-paste the link using MobiControl:  How to copy and paste using RemoteControl
  3. Wait for the download to finish.
  4. In MobiControl, select the device and run a script using the script provided by Tasklet on the ticket.
The script looks like this: install_system_update /sdcard/Download/HE_DELTA_UPDATE_01-30-04.00-OG-U19-STD.zip
The first part is the command (install_system_update) that tells the device to perform an update, and the second part is the path to the firmware update file (/sdcard/Download/HE_DELTA_UPDATE_01-30-04.00-OG-U19-STD.zip) on the device.
  5. The upgrade starts, you might need to click start, and once it reaches 100%, you get prompted to reboot the device.
  6. Once the device starts up again, the device has been updated, and the device should present you with the lockdown screen.
  7. You can validate the version in MobiControl by checking the OEM version, which should now show the updated version.

Issues Upgrading the Firmware

Sometimes a download fails for various reasons.

Please validate the connection and try again.

If the update still fails, ask for assistance on the ticket.

OS upgrade

Upgrading a scanner to a newer OS version can be a decent idea but often not required.

It's a bigger change and not something to do without good reason.

Tasklet Mobile WMS does not require the latest and greatest Android OS, and we suggest using a well-tested version still receiving security updates.

The newer version might have additional functionality, which you have no use for but still requiring more from the scanner's hardware.

You likely only want to upgrade the OS version when the device's version no longer gets security patches, and then the scanner can handle the upgrade.

Ask Tasklet for advice on this if needed.
